Line Producer

The producer responsible for managing the production budget and overseeing the day-to-day logistics of physical production, from pre-production through wrap.

What Is a Line Producer?

A line producer is the producer who manages the "below the line" budget — all production costs that are not the creative principals (director, writer, lead actors). They are responsible for translating the creative vision into a financially viable production plan. The line producer hires department heads, negotiates rates, manages the production budget, and makes the daily spending decisions that keep a production solvent.

The name comes from the traditional film budget format, where a horizontal line separates "above the line" costs (creative talent) from "below the line" costs (physical production). The line producer owns everything below that line.

What the Line Producer Does

In pre-production, the line producer breaks down the script to build a detailed budget. They determine how many shoot days are needed, what crew size is appropriate, which locations are affordable, and where savings can be found without compromising quality. They work closely with the AD to build a schedule that serves both creative and financial goals.

During production, the line producer monitors daily spending, approves purchases, manages overages, and makes financial decisions when the unexpected happens — and in film production, the unexpected always happens. When it rains on an exterior day, the line producer calculates whether to wait, move to a cover set, or reschedule.

The Line Producer in Indian Cinema

In Indian film industries, the line producer role is sometimes called production controller or executive producer (though the latter can mean different things in different contexts). On many Indian productions, particularly in the South Indian industries, the line producer handles a broader scope than their Western counterparts — often managing cast logistics, travel, and accommodation in addition to budget oversight.

Empowering Line Producers with Data

CutPrint gives line producers visibility into the production schedule and its cost implications. The Day Out of Days chart reveals hold-day expenses. The stripboard shows how schedule changes affect resource utilization. Auto-generated breakdowns ensure nothing is missed in the budget. By centralizing production data in one platform, line producers can make informed financial decisions faster — and catch budget overruns before they become crises.
